My Last Weekend

Posted on Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

That’s right, this is my last weekend on Mix 97. I’m moving to Ottawa next week, and I can’t believe how fast it’s all happening!

I just want to say thank you to anyone who is reading this. Thanks for a few different things…for being a loyal listener, and watching me grow over the years. Thanks for phoning in your requests on All Request Sundays…and thanks for reading my blog! When I started this thing, I honestly didn’t thinkanyone would want to read it.

I’ve had a blast over the years at Mix 97, and I’m going to miss it so much! Thanks to all of Mix Nation for rocking out with me on weekends. All the best guys!

Fin.

Memories

Posted on Saturday, December 27th, 2008

My time here is really winding down. One week from tomorrow will be my last show on Mix 97. I’m excited for what’s in store for me in Ottawa, but I’m also very sad to be leaving my home here at Quinte Broadcasting.

I thought since I’m asking you guys to send in some memories of/for me, I should share some of my favourites as well.

Ok, this memory is one I’d rather not re-live, but it’s a classic intern move, so I have to talk about it. It was about two and a half years ago, I backed on station vehicle directly into the side of another station vehicle. It was back when our sister station was Lite 107, and I was pulling out of a driveway in on Lite van, Ingrid was in the passenger seat. I realized at the very last second what I was about to do, but it was too late. I definitely put a nice sized dent in the other Lite 107 van. Leave it to the intern.

Another great memory of my time with the Morning Crew is our road trip to the ice hotel in Quebec City. It was fabulous…a great experience filled with plenty of memorable moments. Falling down and almost taking Ingrid with me is one of them. What can I say? The ice hotel floor is slippery! And of course, waking myself up snoring in the backseat on the drive home was NOT embarassing at all. Note the sarcasm.

I’ve had lots of fun times here on weekends with Mix 97. I’ve always enjoyed hearing from Mix nation, and (All Request) Sunday has easily become my favourite day of the week.

I still want to hear your memories! nina@mix97.com

Boxing Day

Posted on Friday, December 26th, 2008

Hope everyone had a merry Christmas!! I know I did. Today is Boxing Day AKA big-huge-large-crazy shopping day. Yesterday was a day full of presents, turkey and Christmas music, and (after two and a half hours of sleep) I am rocking Mix 97 this morning.

First off, I have to say good luck to those braving the shopping crowds today. Remember your whistles and your flares.

Secondly, I have to say good luck to retail workers today. I’ve been there…I know it gets crazy. Just know, you are appreciated.

Now it’s time for me to get a little self-indulgent. As most of you know, I am leaving Mix Nation within a couple of weeks. My last day here at Mix 97 is January 4th. I want you to do me a favour. I know many of you know me as the weekend DJ here at Mix, but many of you might also know me as ‘Nina the Intern’…my alter ego, or rather my former identity from when I first started out here at the station. However you know me, I want to hear memories. I am getting very sentimental as my time here comes to and end, and I want to hear your memories of me. Selfish? Maybe. Email nina@mix97.com, comment on this post, or call me sometime in studio 97 (make sure it’s when I’m there!)…613-962-9700.

J.D. Brown

Posted on Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Ladies and gentleman, I present to you the newest voice to Mix 97, JD Brown. He’s taking over for me doing the weekend gig. In just a few weeks, he’ll be chatting with you during the weekend, and playing all of Quinte’s Best Variety.

Some news…

Posted on Thursday, December 11th, 2008

Well Mix Nation…I have some sad news. I am leaving. I have been at Mix 97 for three years, and my time has come to move on. I’m moving to Ottawa, but you’ve still got me (whether you like it or not) for the next month. I wanted to spend the holidays with my Mix family.

It goes without saying that there will be someone stepping into my weekend shoes on Mix 97. I’m going to need your help with this one. This Saturday, I’ll be joined in the studio by JD Brown, he’s new here at the station, and he thinks he’s ready for the weekend gig. It’s up to you and me to find out if that is in fact the case.

So, here’s your assignment…it’s quite simple. Listen this Saturday, and phone 613-962-9700 to let me know what you think of JD!

Watch this movie

Posted on Saturday, November 29th, 2008

I watched it the other day, and now I am going to get preachy and tell you all to watch this movie…The 11th Hour. It’s written and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio. If you haven’t seen it, go out and rent it right now. It’s a documentary on global warming. I think it’s so important for everyone to be educated on this subject, and everyone should watch this movie. If we all work together, we can really make a change.

There are so many little things we could all be doing to help out Mother Nature. When you go to the store, ask them not to put your stuff in a bag. Use re-usable ones or, if you’re only getting a couple of things, don’t use one at all. Buy a re-usable plastic water bottle, and make sure you recycle other ones. Use containers to pack food instead of sandwich bags. Those are just a few things, and there are so many more, they’re all things that make such a small difference in our day-to-day lives, but can make a huge difference in the grand scheme of things. We can’t ignore global warming, as much as some people might try to. It’s a fact, and it’s inevitable unless we make the decision to make a change.

Happy Weekend

Posted on Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

Another weekend, and it’s a cold one! I walked to work this morning at about 6:30am, and it was freezing! I think by now (two hours later) I’m almost totally thawed out.

The Mix Morning Crew Primetime Special is coming up. It’s December 10th at the Empire Theatre. They’ve got a bunch of great acts, as usual. Low Level Flight, Divine Brown and The Raynes. I had the Raynes in Studio 97 a while back, they’re both great guys, very talented. It’s definitely going to be an awesome night!

Have you started your Christmas shopping yet? I have! I am so proud of myself. I’m not usually one to start my shopping early, but I have actually bought two presents. I’m so efficient it hurts.

I spoke this morning with Zach Labelle, he’s with the Prince Edward Learning Centre. They’ve got a great thing going on next weekend, very original…it’s a Nintendo Wii Golf Tournament. It’s happening at Books and Company, and all funds raised go towards the PELC and United Way. For more information and tickets, you can call 613-476-1811.

Have a great day everyone!

Happy Saturday!

Posted on Saturday, November 15th, 2008

I’m sitting in the studio this afternoon, looking out the window at this grey day, and I am just waiting for the rain. I can pretty much guarantee the rain will start the second I go outside.

Alright, I have a bit of an issue to raise, and I’d like to see how much of Mix Nation is on my side. The Mix 97 studio is set up something like this: at the front is the control board and main microphone, and there’s a chair in front of it (this would be where Sean Kelly sits in the morning), to the right of that is another microphone and a chair (this is where Ingrid Moore sits) and to the left of the control board is yet another microphone. Now, recently a stool has been added in that spot. This is where my issue comes in. I can only assume that this stool is in place as somewhere for Mike the Intern to rest his behind when on-air with the Mix Morning Crew. Well, back a few years ago when I was known as “Nina the Intern” I did not have a stool. I stood on my two feet and I did not complain. Maybe I’m being immature, but I would just like to know why I spent six months with the morning crew standing on my feet, and after only a couple of months, this Mike fellow gets his own seat. Sean? Ingrid? Any answers?

Ok, enough complaining for now, I suppose.

This morning I spoke with Rick Watts of Operation Red Nose. This is an awesome holiday program where drivers (all volunteers) drive you home in your own car when you’re out having too good a time at holiday parties and such. The program hasn’t officially kicked off yet, they are still in the process of recruiting volunteers. You can help out, get in the holiday spirit and do a good deed! Check it out online at www.rednosequinte.com.

TGIF

Posted on Friday, November 14th, 2008

It is Friday! (Almost) everyone’s favourite day of the week!

I’m at the Mix all weekend! Saturday morning, I’ll be talking to Rick Watts with Operation Red Nose. It’s a great program during the Christmas season. Their goal is to make sure everyone gets home safe and sound, whether it’s from the bar, maybe a house party or (especially) Christmas parties!

Speaking of Christmas parties, I have found myself in a bit of a pickle. I have a second job at Reid’s Dairy, and both of my work Christmas parties are on the same day! Here I’ve been so excited to have two parties to go to, but as it turns out I have to decide which one I want to go to. I certainly can’t be in two places at once, os maybe I’ll have to pull double-duty, and spend a bit of time at each one.

Anyways, enough of my problems! The Belleville Santa Claus Parade is tonight! I am so excited for it. I try not to get too much into the Christmas spirit until at least the start of December, but I do love Santa Claus parades. I’ll be driving the Mix truck tonight! Hope to see you there!

My Favourite Day!

Posted on Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Today is Silk Route day here at Mix 97. Since I’m filling in for Charity, I got her lunch! Here’s what I had today…Chicken Biryani, a rice dish from the Indian Sub-Continent. It’s made with a mixture of spices, basmati rice, veggies and yogurt, as well as tender marinated pieces of chicken. To answer your questions, yes, it is as delicious as it sounds.

Next Wednesday you’ll have a chance to win dinner for two with the Silk Route and Mix 97!
