The Kawartha-Pine Ridge School Board has been asked to consider getting rid of plastic water bottles in schools.
A Clarington Central Secondary School student told trustees she hopes to see all board schools adopt a policy to promote the use of reusable water bottles.
She said 75 per cent of students still use disposable bottles despite knowing their impact on the environment.

It is on to the next round of voting for the Northumberland O-P-P’s proposed portable childrens safety village in the Aviva Community Fund competititon.
Constable Chris Dewsbury says the submission has advanced to the semifinals.
The public will vote on the 62 semifinalists across Canada, with 25 advancing to the finals, where a panel of judges will decide who will get the top three prizes.
People can vote, starting this Wednesday, by going to the Aviva Community Fund website and searching for Dewsbury.

One of two Kingston men charged with robbing and abducting a Tyendinaga Reserve man has been sentenced to five years in prison.
Twenty-five-year-old Gordon Hole pleaded guilty in Belleville Provincial Court to robbery, forcible confinement and breach of recognizance.
He and 31-year-old Sean Thompson were arrested by Tyendinaga Territory Police after 64-year-old Ernest Maracle was robbed and forced from his home-cigarette business on October 12th, and then driven to Deseronto, where he was pushed from a vehicle..
Thompson will appear in court for a pretrial on December 14th.

Here comes Santa Claus.
The jolly old elf himself is making the rounds at local Christmas parades.
Today, you can see him in Picton starting at 3:00 and Trenton from 4:30 p.m.
Next weekend, Saint Nick will be parading in Stirling on Friday and Tweed and Marmora on Saturday.
Santa is making the rounds with less than four weeks to go before his biggest night of the year: Christmas eve.

No one was injured in a car fire north of Belleville.
Both full time firefighters and part time volunteer teams attended the scene at Blessington Rd. and highway 37.
The Belleville fire department says the call came in at 1:56 a.m. and the car was completely involved when they arrived on the scene.
Crews were quick to extinguish the blaze.
Belleville Police are investigating.

An escaped convict has been returned to Frontenac Institution after having been missing for two days.
Provincial police say 38-year-old Kevin Douglas Rice was present for the formal head count Thursday morning, but was later reported missing by the institution’s staff.
The Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement unit and the Ottawa Police Service apprehended Rice at a home in Ottawa without incident.
He was taken back into custody at 6:45 last night (SAT).

After a valiant effort to push their way into the OFSAA Girl’s “AA” Basketball quarter finals… the provincial championship tournament is over for the Nicholson Crusaders.
The Crusaders just weren’t able to handle the firepower of defending champion Bishop Mac from Guelph.. and fell 69-40 at Providence Gym last night.
Jenni Thompson led the Nick’s for the third game in a row with 12 points.
The Semi-Finals will be played this afternoon… with the Championship game tipping off at 8pm at Nicholson.

Make it three wins in a row for the Trenton Golden Hawks… they knocked off the Villanova Knights 6-2 last night.
Jeremy McCarthy lead the way with two goals… Taylor Penerewski had three helpers… and Spencer Finney made 21 saves for the Hawks.
They visit the Blues in Collingwood tonight for an 8:00 start.

The Wellington Dukes picked up two big points last night with a 5-2 win over the Pickering Panthers.
A Sean Rudy hat-trick was the difference for the Dukes who have now won 3 straight after a 5 game losing streak.
Jeremy Franklin chipped in with a goal and three assists and Adam Zamec scored his first for Wellington.
The Dukes take the night off before a battle with Markham tomorrow night @ 6:30.
With a win tomorrow… the Dukes can stretch their lead over the Waxers atop the C-C-H-L East standings.

The road woes seem to be over for the Belleville Bulls… at least for now.
The Bulls snapped a 5 game losing streak away from the Yardmen arena with a 3-2 win over the Niagara Ice Dogs last night.
Andy Bathgate, Kyle DeCoste, and Shawn Lalonde all tallied for Belleville… while Tyson Teichmann made 33 saves to earn his second win of the season.
The Bulls finish off their Western road swing tonight when they visit the Owen Sound Attack.

No reported injuries after an armed robbery in Colborne last night.
Northumberland O-P-P say it happened just after 11pm at the Mac’s convenience store.
They say a lone man entered the store with a knife and made off with a small amount of cash.
The suspect is described as 5 foot 9 with a slim build… he was last seen wearing a black ski jacket, jeans, and a ski mask… and was headed westbound on King Street.
The O-P-P K-9 unit was called in but unable to locate the suspect.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Northumberland O-P-P.

A big find of dangerous materials by police in Trenton yesterday.
Quinte West O-P-P were called around 4:00 yesterday afternoon… after unknown suspects dumped a car on Herman Street and took off running.
When officers popped the trunk… they found a stash of ammo, long knives, loose needles, and tools.
Police are looking for the suspects and the investigation continues.

Quinte West O-P-P are looking for more information on a hit and run incident in Trenton this afternoon.
It happened just after noon when police say.. a dark blue minivan turned onto South Trent Street without stopping at a red light… and struck an un-named youth… knocking him to the ground.
The youth suffered minor injuries… and police are looking for the driver.

The results are in from a post-mortem conducted on the body of a military flight attendant from C-F-B Trenton.
38 year old Marie-Frances Comeau’s body was found in her Brighton home Wednesday afternoon… and police say her death is now being investigated as a homicide.
O-P-P say no further details on the cause of death will be released… as to protect the integrity of the investigation.
Police say there is no current safety risk to the public… but they are looking for more information on the case.

After two years of lobbying the province….Belleville is getting a Nurse Practioner led clinic. Tammy Armstrong has been one of the driving forces behind the proposal and says Health Minister Deb Matthews announced the clinic for Belleville this afternoon. Armstrong says they’re very excited to bring a new model of care to the city and additional healthcare services to 43-hundred patients who don’t have a primary healthcare provider. The location hasn’t been chosen yet.

Provincial Police were involved in a standoff on the 4-0-1 near Trenton this morning….but, no other information has been released. Officers with guns drawn approached another vehicle in the eastbound lanes just east of the Glen Miller Road at about 11 o’clock this morning. Callers say eastbound traffic was held up for a while. OPP confirm there was a traffic stop….but, no other details have been released.

Senior governments announced twenty new affordable housing units for Belleville today. MP Daryl Kramp, MPP Leona Dombrowsky and other municipal politicians were on hand to announce the 2.4 million dollar investment at 185 Cannifton Road. MP Kramp says during these tough economic times they’re committed to giving hope to seniors who need quality, affordable housing with Canada’s Economic Action Plan. Hastings County Warden Ron Emond says there are still 1300 households on their wait list. and MPP Dombrowsky says the provincial government will continue to work with municipal partners to ensure more units are built.

The O-P-P have released the names of two people who died in a head-on collision on highway seven, west of Kaladar.
Police say two S-U-V’s crashed into each other shortly after eight o’clock last night, killing 55-year-old Peter Clark of Clyde, Ohio, and 33-year-old Michael Garland of the Perth area.
A nine-year-old girl was removed by firefighters from Garland’s vehicle and is in critical condition in Kingston General Hospital. A 32-year-old London man in the same vehicle is in Belleville Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The investigation into the cause of the accident, which happened while it was raining and the pavement was wet, is continuing.

The Electors of Prince Edward County is feeling good after eight and a half days of an Ontario Municipal Board Hearing in Picton.
The Electors appealed county council’s decision earlier this year to leave any decision about reducing the number of councillors and cutting the number of wards until a referendum in next year’s election..
Electors Co-chair Jim McPherson says he believes the hearing, which ended yesterday, was fair, and he’s looking forward to the chairperson’s ruling.
The chair will have to release her decision soon because any change to next year’s municipal election will have to be made by the end of December.. The Electors wants to reduce the number of councillors from 15 to 12, and the number of wards from ten to six.

A drug bust in Deseronto has led to a break for police investigating breakins and thefts in Belleville and other local communities..
Three people were arrested by the O-P-P after a marijuana grow operation, cocaine and thousands of dollars worth of stolen property were found at a home on Mill Street on November 18th.
A fourth person, 29-year-old Michael McKeown of no fixed address, has since been arrested, and faces numerous charges, including six counts of possession of stolen property and drug offences.
Police now say some of the property recovered came from a 127-thousand-dollar breakin in at Sam the Record Man in Quinte Mall last summer, Small World Baby, Foxboro I-G-A, Richard Davis in Picton and residential breakins in Belleville, Picton and Deseronto.
