So you think you know Canada, eh!

Posted on Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Tomorrow Canada celebrates it’s Birthday, and here’s some fun facts you might not know about our great country!

It is said that Alberta is virtually rat-free. Rat hunters over the past 50 years have practically exterminated wild rats from the province. This has saved over $1 Billion in livestock lose and property damage.

The electric light bulb was first patented in 1875 by Canadian Henry Woodward of Toronto and fellow inventor Matthew Evans. The two entrepreneurs could not raise the financing to commercialize their invention, and they sold the patent to Thomas Edison.

In 1913, Gideon Sundback of St Catharines designed the modern zipper.

In 1930, John D. Millar, an engineer working for the Ontario Department of Transport thought up the idea of painting lines on roads. The world’s first lines were painted on a portion of highway near the Ontario/Quebec border

Canada is the largest country in the Western Hemisphere and is the second largest country in the world behind Russia. The area size of Canada is a whopping 9,984,670 square kilometers.

There are more donut shops per capita in Canada than in any other country!
