To celebrate the 41st anniversary here’s some interesting facts about the movie:
- The script was written by Paul Schrader, and it was loosely based on his own experiences. After hitting a rough patch, Paul was living in his car, feeling pretty out of it and hadn’t talked to anyone in weeks. That’s when he wrote Taxi Driver.
- Hard to believe, but Robert De Niro was almost not cast. Instead the studio wanted to use Jeff Bridges, AND supposedly, Neil Diamond was after the role (yes… THAT Neil Diamond!). Can you imagine?!
- Harvey Keitel who played Sport (the creepy pimp), brought a REAL pimp he knew from Hell’s Kitchen in Manhattan (where he grew up), on set to help sell his role. Not sure how to feel about that one…
- Jodie Foster was only !!TWELVE!! when she was cast as child prostitute, Iris. The role was considered a wee bit inappropriate (no kidding) for a kid that young, so they had a social worker on set with her. She also had to spend 7 hours in therapy to prove she could handle it. Yikes.
Happy Birthday Taxi Driver!
