Canadian Heritage

I’ve always wondered why hockey players are different than every other athlete or person that I have ever met. Is it because of our lifestyle; is it because we don’t care what other people think about us; is it because we play for the love of the game and not the money? It’s a combination of all of those, but the recurring issue that I find to be most accurate is that we are different than everyone else because being a hockey player is more than just playing a sport for us; it’s the air we breathe. Without it, we would cease to exist. It’s something we’re born with and will die with…..

At conception, God reached down and touched every one of us and steered our lives on the path of beauty ness.

Growing up, when other kids were playing freeze tag and kick the can, we were in hockey camps learning the core values of the sport we were born to play. When other kids were watching the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Barney, we were watching Don Cherry’s Rock Em’ Sock Em’ Hockey vids and Slap Shot. As we got older, when other kids were playing with their bikes and stealing from corner stores, we were in our basements or our garages toe blackening our jets and mastering the art of torching the perfect curve for our twig.

Then, something happened that changed us forever and taught us the true essence of what being a hockey player was all about; travel teams and Juniors. We left our friends and family back home for the life of a hockey player. We soon became detached from our home lives and friends because that was not our life anymore. This was the beginning of our transformation from hockey lads to brothers. You soon realize that all you have is each other. The beaut to the right and left of you become your blood, and nothing could ever break that bond. Thus the formation, and continuance of the brotherhood of hockey players lives on. You do everything together; they are your family now. It becomes an unspoken bond between the lads. You would do anything for them as if they were your blood, and you know they would do the same for you. You might have only known him for a few weeks, but you would never throw him under the bus when things got shaky. If one of the lads gets into a tilly at a bar, the whole team jumps in. There’s no better wingman in the league than one of the lads. We’ll happily jump on a grenade just so Millsy can shelf one. The only thing that can compare to this type of bond is the bond that develops between men in combat. You would do anything for them and they would do anything for you. Words need not be spoken. You just know.

A perfect example of this is Gongshowhockey. You have players from all over the world there. Professional players to high school players chatting it up, sharing tips for improvement, enriching our knowledge of the sport, and just simply basking in the greatness of our beloved game. We can do this because we are all one in the same. Cut from the same mold if you will. It doesn’t matter how old you are or what level you play at. From the 40 year old crafty vetter to the 17 year old high school hero, we all unite under the same flag. 99.99% of us don’t even know each other at all, not even first names or what they look like, but it doesn’t matter because we are inherently tied to the traditions and lifestyle elements of our great game and that’s all that matters. You won’t find this in any other sport though. Why? Because their sport isn’t their identity; it’s not their flesh and blood. Yeah, they might be akin to their sports traditions and mystique, but not even close to the level that we are, and this website and the subsequent clothing line is the proof of that. I’m not getting on my knees here, but can anyone honestly say that this isn’t the greatest community on the web or even in general. For a lot of people, myself included, this is the only place where we can chat intelligently about hockey and people get it. But when the boy’s in the N start showing it off though, you know it’s legit. But this site just adds to the overall greatness and integrity of our game. I think anyway.

No matter whom you are, where you played, how old you are, or what country you hail from, you know that if you meet one of the lads, you immediately know that you can connect on a level that no one else can. Even though you may not know each other, you have the most important thing in common and everyone better watch out because that shaker’s going to turn into a gonger. Why? Because we run the show where ever we go. We are a band of brothers. We are hockey players.

Just something that i really took notice to and pride in. It’s something that I think seperates us from everyone else. Feel free to dispute, carve, or comment. Just thought I should do a piece on it since I think it’s one of our sports greatest aspects. Felt it was relevent enough.
