Texting While Driving? We Have Bigger Fish to Fry

There’s no denying it. Chatting and texting on a mobile device while driving is a huge problem. We have helped to combat it with hands-free Bluetooth gadgetry, and legislation in most provinces that dolls out tickets to those found using a handheld device while they’re at the wheel. Some argue that the actual act of talking or communicating is what’s so distracting, not physically holding the phone. Regardless, it appears we have much bigger issues to deal with on the distracted driving front.

According to a new study conducted in six countries (not including Canada) by GN Netcom, parent company to Bluetooth accessory maker Jabra, people engage in much more distracting behaviour while driving then chatting on their BlackBerries. Some of the most common include eating, putting on makeup, and even changing clothes!

The worst habit is eating, which 72% of survey respondents admit to doing while at the wheel. Thirty-five per cent say they’ve changed their clothes, and 23% declare they’ve styled their hair while driving. Other common activities: kissing others (29%), performing sexual acts (15%), applying makeup (13%), and shaving (5%).

Of course this isn’t to say that playing with a mobile device isn’t far up on that list as well: 28% admit to having sent an SMS while driving; 12% have read or written an e-mail; and 5% even say they’ve played a video game! Interestingly, though, it appears that digital isn’t the only culprit: 10% admit to reading newspapers or magazines while driving. Only 32% of respondents use a hands-free device in the car.

Woman Sues Rogers ‘Cause Her Cell Bill Proved She Was Cheating

I was going to refrain from commenting on this news story just due to the sheer stupidity of it. But it seems the media is having a field day with it, so I figured, why not jump in?

I’m talking about a little tale of the Canadian woman named Gabriella Nagy who decided to sue her cell phone company, Rogers, because the carrier consolidated her private cellular bill (under her maiden name) with her and her husband’s cable and Internet services. The idea was to offer the family savings once Rogers realized the bills and names matched up; but the result was a husband who discovered his wife was cheating on him through multiple, lengthy phone calls made to one particular number. He walked out, she was so distraught that she lost her job, and now she’s calling foul on Rogers for ruining her life.

Yes, you read that correctly. She’s suing Rogers in a last-ditch effort to place blame somewhere else. The amount? More than half-a-million dollars.

HST in Ontario: What Will Be Taxed?

For all those people who are still unclear on how the introduction of the new HST will affect their new TV or appliance purchase, here is an exerpt from a marketnews.ca article:

Let’s start with the electronics category. HST will not be applied to consumer electronics products like TVs, DVD and Blu-ray players, MP3 players, cell phones and service, or CDs/DVDs/Blu-ray discs. (However, new and unrelated recycling fees in Ontario will affect pricing in these categories.) So the consumer electronics market isn’t immune to higher costs this year.
