Two found dead after Eastern Ontario shooting
An 18-year-old man will be charged with killing a mother and her daughter in the small eastern Ontario community of Mountain View, police said Friday.
The accused, from nearby Belleville, Ont., is to appear in court Saturday. His name is not being released.
Police were called to a home south of Belleville at approximately 6:10 a.m. Friday morning after receiving a 911 call about a shooting.
Inside the house, officers found the bodies of Tracy Hannah, 46, and her 14-year-old daughter Whitney.
Another 18-year-old daughter was airlifted to Kingston General Hospital with serious injuries. She was in stable condition Friday.
The accused man, who was apparently known to the family, was arrested following a chase in nearby Trenton, about three hours after the killings.
The rural neighbourhood where the shootings occurred was sealed off Friday as police forensic investigators combed the property.
“It’s a very quiet street — this is very out of character for this area,” said Jen Snider, who lives down the street. “It’s very scary. It’s a quiet neighbourhood and we all know everybody.”
While many of those on the street are long-time residents, the Hannah family had only moved in relatively recently, Snider said.
“They were pretty quiet,” she said. “They kept to themselves mostly.”
Police say they do not expect to make further arrests.
OPP Sgt. Kristine Rae told CTV.ca that the suspect had been apprehended “in the Quinte West area,” though she did not have specific details to release.
The City of Quinte West includes the former municipalities of Trenton, Sidney, Murray and Frankford, according to the city’s official website.
Media in Eastern Ontario reported Friday that the suspect was nabbed near an automotive shop in Trenton, Ont.
Jay Miller, the owner of Milbro Automotive, said he got a call from a local radio station reporter — who was watching the scene from the other side of the street — asking him if he could see the person inside the cruiser on Friday morning.
After looking out the window, Miller told the radio station and CTV.ca that the man in the back of the cruiser was in his mid-20s, had dark hair and a brush cut.
“He was slumped over, it looked to me like he had handcuffs on,” Miller told CTV.ca in a brief telephone interview on Friday morning.
Miller got the sense something was up when he drove into work Friday morning and saw “a cruiser pretty much on every corner” in Trenton, as they searched for the suspect.
“It was like a war zone,” he said.
