ENSS’s Beauty and the Beast gets straight A’s

May 8th, 2008

http://www.enss.ca/pb/images/img1768474e1612b5fa9.JPG

Since it’s a high school musical, let’s give the ENSS “Beauty and the Beast” show a report card.

It would look something like this:

Acting – excellent

Singing – excellent

Blocking and staging – excellent

Set and costumes – excellent

Choreography – excellent

Casting – exceptional

This reviewer could go on like this, but I think readers now get the picture.

The thing is, this does not look, feel nor sound like a high school musical as one man in the audience commented during intermission: “It just doesn’t seem like a high school musical.”

He was right. It is far too mature and polished for that. If it’s not professional, its mighty close to it. But then East Northumberland Secondary School has a tradition of presenting musicals just like that. Where they get their talent pool for singers, dancers, actors, musicians, set and costume makers and more is irrelevant….the fact is – it’s there.

Waterfront Organizers Mum On Headliners

May 8th, 2008

Wondering who the headliners are for this July’s Waterfront Festival?

Keep guessing, say organizers.

Terry Pascoe agreed members of the Waterfront and Ethnic Festival committee have been mum about plans for the festival, but shrugged off the silence to timing. He said it makes no sense to begin spending all the budget’s advertising money two months before the festivities. As the festival nears, more information will be released, he said.

“It’s all going ahead,” Pascoe said. “We haven’t got any big announcements right now. There haven’t been any big announcements.” In previous years there has been a palpable buzz in the community as Waterfront nears and Pascoe said he expects that buzz to return as the festival grows closer but, right now, the community has many events to consider.

“I think it’s been a little overshadowed by a lot of the other events,” he said referring to the Classic Rock Festival at The Empire Theatre and the Big Music Fest featuring The Tragically Hip next month at Zwicks Park. “We’re nestled in the middle and we’re happy with that.”

Pascoe said the blueprint for Waterfront remains intact with the entire festival taking place at one location again this year. West Zwicks Park will play host to the event with a strong focus being placed on the ethnic portion this year.

That focus, he said, will likely include more ethnic music on the stage than in previous years.

“I think the focus is going to be more on ethnic entertainment,” he said. “We’re still working on things and everything’s fine.”

Events such as the parade, the fireworks, the Children’s Village and the Conklin Midway will all return this year, he said. The format of the festival will remain basically unchanged and the other events which will be taking place throughout the summer are not seen as a challenge to Waterfront but only add to the city’s summer excitement, he said.

“Everything’s fine and we’re looking forward to the summer,” Pascoe said. “It’s going to be exciting as last year and we’re going to build on all the positives.”

The Waterfront and Ethnic Festival is scheduled for July 10, 11, 12 and 13.

The Sears Strokers pedalled for a good cause aboard the Heart and Stroke Big Bike Wednesday afternoon. The cycling team from the Sears Distribution and Call Centre, including Jennifer Boutilier, who wore a Wonder Woman outfit for the ride from the Harbourview Plaza through downtown Belleville, raised $4,500 for the heart and stroke foundation. A second Sears team also participated and, together, they raised $7,500. Today is the last day for the Big Bike in Belleville before moving to Trenton and Picton.
