Recent research shows that pets can support mental health through companionship, emotional comfort, routine, physical activity, and social connection.

One 2024 study found that after people were put into a mildly stressful state spending just ten minutes interacting with their own dog improved positive mood and reduced anxiety.

A 2024 poll also showed that 84 percent of pet owners said their pet has a mostly positive impact on their mental health.

On Wednesday, Sean Kelly, Mariam Serkal and Dr Julie Gowthorpe, RSW tackle a very small question with surprisingly big feelings: Do you smile at strangers in public?

Dr Gowthorpe explained that the pattern in research is not “men shouldn’t smile” but that “women often have to make rapid safety judgments in public, and friendliness can land differently depending on context.”

So while men should be mindful in public, they don’t always need to be overly cautious unless the context demands it.

Do not force it when it does not. And if someone doesn’t smile back, try not to write a whole story in your head about your worth, their character, and why they don’t like you.

On Friday, Sprague Foods President Keenan Sprague joined the conversation with Sean Kelly and Mariam Serkal to explain what makes the company tick after all these years.

Not the huge dramatic kind you see in movies, but the everyday kind, when someone lets you down, when work does not go the way you hoped, when family does not show up the way you expected, or when a friendship starts to feel one-sided.

One of the healthiest things we can do is stop treating disappointment like it is abnormal. It is not abnormal. It is normal. The goal is not to never feel it. The goal is to respond to it before it hardens into resentment.
